Project Description

The consortium Mycelium Materials Europe (MME), Christiaens Group, and Stichting Wageningen Research is developing an innovative method for the industrial production of mycelium as a sustainable alternative to leather. This plant-based material, derived from the root structure of mushrooms (mycelium), offers a more environmentally friendly option than traditional leather, which often is harmful to the environment and animals. The project focuses on scaling-up production and improving processes such as mechanization and post-processing. It has the potential to transform the leather market and create a significant economic and ecological impact in the Eastern part of the Netherlands. This project has been made possible in part by the European Regional Development Fund 2021–2027 (ERDF, project number Oost-00128).
